Summer PR Strategies: Keep the Heat, Not the Burnout
By Brittney Ryba
As the temps climb higher and summer is in full swing, PR professionals often face a unique set of challenges: team vacations, slower news cycles, and the temptation to take the foot off the gas. But summer doesn’t have to be a season of stagnation—or stress. With the right strategy, you can keep your public relations efforts hot without burning out your team or yourself.
Here’s how to maintain momentum while embracing the summer season:
1. Plan for Vacations
To keep your PR engine running while people are out of the office, build a flexible editorial calendar early. Identify key dates, deadlines, and opportunities so the team can stagger time off without missing a beat. Use collaborative tools to stay aligned and avoid last-minute scrambles.
Tip: Create “evergreen” content that can be slotted in when news is slow, or staff is out. Think thought leadership, FAQs, or seasonal tips related to your brand or industry.
2. Lean Into Seasonal Storytelling
Summer is ripe with new possibilities. Tie your pitch or campaign to summer trends: travel, wellness, family, outdoors, sustainability, or back-to-school themes. The key is relevance.
Tip: A financial institution could pitch tips for “budget-friendly summer fun,” while a health brand might offer insights on “staying safe in the heat.”
3. Leverage Slower News Cycles
Many companies pull back during the summer, creating a less crowded media landscape. Use this lull to your advantage—pitch those big features or thought leadership pieces that might otherwise get buried.
Tip: Journalists may be juggling with fewer resources in the summer. Make your pitches clear, concise, and timely to increase your chances of coverage.
4. Experiment with Lighthearted Content
Summer is a great time to showcase your brand’s personality. Loosen up your tone, highlight behind-the-scenes moments, or try a fun social media campaign. Think of employee summer playlists, office pets, or user-generated content challenges.
Tip: “This or That: Summer Edition” Instagram stories, or a “Where Are They Now?” series featuring past partners or clients.
5. Double Down on Digital
If events and conferences slow in person, shift energy into digital channels. Webinars, podcast appearances, influencer takeovers, and virtual roundtables can keep your brand visible without the logistical lift.
Tip: These virtual events can be recorded and repurposed into blogs, quotes, and social media snippets throughout the fall.
6. Set Boundaries and Build in Breaks
Summer PR shouldn’t mean sacrificing wellbeing. Set realistic expectations with clients and leadership, communicate boundaries clearly, and encourage your team to unplug when off. A refreshed team produces better, more creative work.
Tip: Institute “no meeting Fridays” or designate a summer “quiet week” to catch up, reset, or just breathe.
7. Prep for Fall (Yes, Already)
Use any downtime to get ahead. Start drafting fall campaigns, reviewing analytics, and refreshing media lists. Fall is notoriously busy—laying groundwork now saves time and stress later.
Summer can be both a productive and restorative time for PR teams. By staying proactive, tapping into seasonal trends, and protecting your bandwidth, you can keep the momentum going—without melting down. So, pour that iced coffee, soak in some sun (responsibly!), and keep your strategies sizzling all season long.
