Balancing the Buzz: Wellness Strategies for Thriving in PR
By Brittney Ryba
August is National Wellness Month – and it’s not just for yoga lovers! For those of us in public
relations, it’s a powerful reminder to pause, breathe deeply, and embrace mindfulness in a
fast-paced, always-on industry.
From managing media storms to juggling overlapping campaigns, the demands of PR can
feel nonstop. That’s why this month is the perfect opportunity to prioritize your mental well-
being — while keeping your messaging sharp.
As the co-leader of my office’s Fitwell Employee Resource Group, wellness is a personal and
professional priority for me. I’ve seen firsthand how intentional self-care can help you show
up stronger, more focused, and more creative in your work. So, let’s make space for balance, boundaries, and a little self-care in our PR strategy!
What Is Mindfulness—and Why Does It Matter in PR?
Mindfulness is the practice of being present, aware, and intentional. In the context of PR, that
might mean:
- Approaching each pitch with clarity
- Managing your schedule with purpose
- Stepping away from your inbox to reset before a big meeting
It’s about calming the chaos, sharpening your focus, and protecting your energy — all of
which are essential for strong communication and sustainable performance.
Think of mindfulness as your personal press release: clear, concise, and centered.
5 Wellness Tips for PR Pros This August
Whether you’re navigating client calls, content calendars, or crisis response plans, these
simple wellness strategies can make a big difference:
1. Schedule “Unplug” Time
Carve out time each day to step away from screens. Even a 10-minute tech break can
improve mental clarity and reduce fatigue.
2. Practice the 4-7-8 Breathing Technique
Need a reset before a big pitch or client call? Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, and exhale for
8. It’s simple — and scientifically proven to calm the nervous system.
3. Set Boundaries with Notifications
Constant pings lead to constant stress. Silence non-urgent alerts or schedule “focus hours” to
help you stay in control of your time and attention.
4. Start Meetings with a Wellness Check
A simple “How are you doing today?” at the beginning of a meeting can foster connection and
create space for empathy and support.
5. Celebrate Small Wins
From landing a media placement to meeting a tight deadline — take a moment to
acknowledge it. Recognizing your progress fuels motivation and helps combat burnout.
Wellness Makes You a Better Communicator
When you’re well-rested, mentally focused, and emotionally balanced, your work improves.
You write more clearly. You listen more actively. You engage more authentically. Wellness
isn’t a luxury for PR pros — it’s a necessity.
This month is an opportunity to pause and take stock of something just as critical as your
next headline: your well-being. August may mark the end of summer, but it’s also a chance to
start something powerful: a personal wellness practice that supports your growth, resilience,
and success in public relations. Your clients, colleagues — and most importantly, you — will
benefit from it.
